Go Figure Group
Established 3 years ago, GoFigure was
inspired by mentor and visual artist Mark Vasquez-MacKay, and formed following
a successful student exhibit in May 2010 at Higher Grounds in Calgary. Lack of studio space and willing models notwithstanding,
this group of determined artists began meeting weekly to explore the dynamics
of drawing the figure.
Each week the
artists seek to understand and capture the essence of what is human. Something so common and so well known as the
human figure, is by its very commonality challenging to the artist, and
difficult to capture on paper or canvas.
Live models and props provide the inspiration. Short gestural drawings from 2 to 5 minutes
in length are followed up with longer poses.
Currently in studio preparing for an
exhibit at Lux Laundromat (Feb 2013), the members of GoFigure are excited about the work
they are producing. A dominant theme has
been the exploration of new media, with artists exploring new papers, pan
pastels, and elegant writers and other application tools as well as working in
the more traditional media of oil and water colours. Inks, charcoal, pastels, and conte permit the
members of GoFigure to express themselves in a variety of styles, each style
distinctive.
Several successful showings have introduced
this group of artists to the Calgary Art community. Market Collective (August 2010), Café Koi
(October 2010) Art Spot (November 2010), Galleria (April 2011), New Black
Studio (October 2011), Resolution Art Gallery (2012). For this
outpouring of support, we are grateful.
GoFigure group appreciates the support of
its wonderful and inspiring models who place so much trust in us, and allow us
to tell their stories visually. The interaction between model and artist is vital
to the story, and creates additional depth in the pieces produced.
The members of GoFigure are : Karen
Alderson, Teresa Coulter, Sabrina Larson, Rita Reddy , Sona Sandhu, Bruce
Watson, Rafael Allocca, and John Ross. Guest
artists are invited to join weekly sessions as space is available. The artists
are available for commissions, and can be contacted at gofigure2010@gmail.com.
Go figure is always looking for models to pose
for single sessions of 3 hours, or multiple sessions, 6:30 to 9:30 Wednesday
evenings. No experience is required, we provide coaching as needed. Please
contact us at the above email if interested.
